Interviews can be a terrifying experience. After all they are not a natural part of our daily routine. Our hopes, dreams and emotional stability is dependant on the outcome.

Be Mentally Prepared

I've always found a reverse of perspective has always helped me achieve a good result. I adopt the attitude that they want me too work for them as they have seen my resume and called me in for an interview. My thoughts are, "Do I want to work for them?". This prepares me to ask them questions. I'm already prepared for their questions because I ensure I've read their website, news and job descriptions.

Dress the Part

Always dress the way you would for doing the job. If you are applying to be a gardener don't dress like the manager; if you are applying to be the manager, don't dress like the gardener. Even if you are applying to be the gardener at least wear clean neat overalls rather than tatty, grubby ones. See "Good Impressions" article.

Pretend to be Confident

Even if you are not, portray confidence by being prepared, rested and at ease. Confidence is a major factor in determining suitability for a job. If you are not confident you can do the job, the interviewer won't have confidence in you. Video yourself conducting mock interviews with a friend. You will feel embarrassed until you don't. When you don't feel embarrassed any longer you are nearing being ready. Practice with different friends you feel less comfortable with. Remember, only the really lucky get the job on the first interview. You will get better.
